CHAPTER TWELVE

I THINK WE can be adults, admit there’s an attraction here and leave it at that.

Lucy hoped she’d sounded calm and sophisticated, but inside she was a trembling mess. Even now, in the morning, a full twelve hours later, her body was still throbbing from his touch, craving more. Thank goodness their heads had prevailed. If they hadn’t stopped when they had, she wasn’t sure she would’ve been able to.

She’d wanted to keep going. To surrender to his touch and his kisses. To let go.

Lucy wasn’t a virgin she had a mini-person as evidence of that fact but it had been a long time since she’d done anything that could possibly have created another person. Alex had been her first and only, and that relationship hadn’t been what anyone would call a raging success. While she would never regret having Lachie, she had many regrets over Alex. They had both been too young and naive to navigate their relationship after Lachie successfully. Alex had been supportive to begin with, and for a while they had planned a future together, but in the way only seventeen-year-olds who haven’t had much experience in the realities of life can.

She had loved Alex. And she knew that he had honestly once loved her. But her experience with Alex had taught her that sometimes, no matter how much you wanted it to be otherwise, love wasn’t always strong enough to withstand what life hurled at it. If she hadn’t become pregnant, maybe their love would have been strong enough to last. But very few relationships were strong enough to survive an unplanned teenage pregnancy, and one set of parents who disapproved and openly meddled.

Lucy zipped up her suitcase, picked up her handbag, did a last check of her room before she wheeled the suitcase out to the living room. She was relieved to be getting home and back to Lachie. Glad to be leaving the complication of last night behind. And yet?

After two days and nights, Fiji was starting to feel like her world. And after two days of almost constant contact with Marcus, he was starting to feel like her new normal.

Except he wasn’t hers. And this wasn’t normal. It was just a bubble. Sydney was real. Lachie was real. The fantasy life of being with Marcus was coming to an end and it was for the best. Just like it was for the best that they had stopped things when they had last night.

Marcus didn’t look up from his phone when she entered the room. Which was also a good thing. Her stomach leapt each time she saw even the back of his head; when her eyes met his it practically backflipped.

Lucy looked out the window at the spectacular view. Missing it already.

Marcus sighed. ‘This isn’t good.’

‘What’s not?’ Had something happened at work?

‘A volcanic eruption. In Indonesia.’

Lucy’s heart stilled. That was bad, to be sure, but it wasn’t affecting them directly. ‘That’s no good. Have a lot of people died?’

He shook his head.
